How Registration Works

With the exception of the first Fall semester, MSSM students are expected to register for courses through their SIO account.

Registration for each term takes place during a specified period of time (as noted on the CMU Academic Calendar). Students should make sure to take note of registration dates & deadlines.

Students are encouraged to read through the SIO registration guide below for details on how to navigate the registration process. Additional registration-related information may be sent out from your iii Academic Advisor via email.

Advanced Course Details & Forms

This comparison chart provides an overall of how and when an Independent Study, Capstone or Practicum experience could be a part of your MSSM degree. MSSM students can talk with their academic advisor about these opportunities after completing their first semester.

Independent Study

An independent study course is an individual student project guided by a CMU faculty member for variable units (6 – 12 units) as an elective.

Capstone

A capstone course is a team project guided by a CMU faculty member to work on a student concept or idea for variable units (12 –24 units) during a student's final semester. Depending on degree plan, this course will either be an optional requirement or an elective.

Practicum

A practicum experience is a team project guided by a CMU faculty member to work on an industry sponsored topic or problem during a student's final semester. Depending on degree plan, this course will either be a optional requirement or an elective. This course is offered annually during the Fall semester.

The procedure for participating in practicum will be sent to all eligible students directly.

Start-Up Creation in Practice

Similar to an independent study, the Start-Up Creation in Practice course focuses specifically on new venture creation. Students will work on developing their technology-focused idea into a potentially viable company during the semester.
